Project Earth H2O Water Bottles are BPA Free
(Bisphenol A)

Is your reusable water bottle safe?

Plastic reusable water bottles are convenient and great for taking water on the go. But, is your bottle safe? How can you be assured that chemicals in the plastic do not leach into your drinking water? If you taste plastic, chances are you are drinking it! Today, most reusable water bottles are made of polycarbonate, easily identified by the #7 recycling symbol on the bottom of the bottle.

Recent studies indicate polycarbonate water bottles leach bisphenol A.
What is Bisphenol A? Bisphenol A is a xenoestrogen, a known endocrine disruptor that disturbs the hormonal messaging in our bodies. Synthetic xenoestrogens are linked to breast cancer and uterine cancer in woman, decreased testosterone levels in men, and are particularly devastating to babies and young children. BPA has even been linked to insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. (For more science on the effects of BPA see these studies: Environmental Health Perspectives Journal).

Facts:

  • On the Today Show, April 9, 2008, Dr. Leo Trasande of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine addressed the alarming facts of BPA and reusable water bottles stating, “Bottles with the numbers 3, 6, or 7 are not safe for use across the board.”
  • Retailers like Walmart and Toy-R-Us announced plans to pull products and reusable water bottles containing BPA from their shelves.
  • Evidence contesting the safety of polycarbonate (#7) bottles is so overwhelming that highly respected MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) stores, a bastion of earth-conscious products for sports and outdoor enthusiast across Canada for years, has pulled all polycarbonate water bottles from its shelves, along with other food and beverage containers made of polycarbonate plastic.
  • Bottled water, because it is less regulated, has less-certain purity and safety than tap water, and is much more expensive. If you’re worried about tap water quality, consider installing a home water filter or use an inexpensive filter pitcher.
